Today we went to 2 churches. The first one was in the cardboard village, and Kenny, Zack, JLai, and I helped lead worship by playing 4 songs. (Two were Spanish songs, one a song that originated from Ghana, and one in English.)
These girls from the village danced and sang a song for us during the service that was truly amazing :) We later learned they had walked 2 miles to get there this morning.
This is how the children get to the church in the aldea de bordos (cardboard village) if they do not walk.
After we went to the second church, we ate at Taco Pollo before going into the aldea de bordos.
We drove for about 2 miles inside the cardboard village. The children were so curious and happy to see people. It makes me excited to go out and talk with children tomorrow when we start VBS in the hospital.
But honestly, I feel so bad taling pictures of these children when they barely have a place to call home. It’s hard to see children with big bellies because of parasites as we are worried about dying laptop batteries, etc.
Some of the houses recently burned in a fire. SO there is a possibility we will be able to get some lumber in next week from the States and help them rebuild.
These are the filters the boys are going to be installing. They remove parasites and last for 10 years. Tomorrow they are starting their work by loading and unloading 21,000 pounds of sand for these filters. That’s a lottt of sand.
This little boy was absolutely adorable. He would not stop laughing his head off to EVERYTHING. It amazes me how happy these children are with what they have. They understand that they do not have a lot, but that does not stop them from living life and having joy.
The pictures below are the basic inside structure of a house in the aldea de bordos. There is a small propane gas stove and a bucket for washing dishes and showering. And then there's a small living room. The entire house is about the size of a standard living room in the States.
JLai playing Tierra y Mar con los ninos.
After we played soccer with the locals and won! :D Tomorrow us girls are going to be working in the hospital with the children. I am so excited to speak with them- it’s a little less intimidating and so I hope to improve even more. I definitely feel that I am understanding more Spanish and it’s only day 2. Speaking it back after understanding it, however, is harder because of so many conjugations ;P
Till tomorrow,
Lainey
These pictures speak a thousand words....
